ROUND AND ROUND

Round and round,
the children played
far away from school.
Round and round,
we all keep turning
like a weather vane.
Round and round,
here comes the fashion
of the springtime,
and when the year's warmth
draws near,
another fashion will arise
beneath the summer sun;
snow and wind
will bring to us the fashions
of autumn and winter.
Round and round,
we shall run blindly
to buy the things
the moment demands.
Round and round,
dwelling in time
with ancient customs
upon a new globe.
Round and round,
we shall keep turning
like marionettes.
With free verse
or rhyming verse,
we shall gently dance
rock and roll or tango.
Shall we be serpents
or shall we be birds?
Spirit or earth?
Round and round,
we go linked together,
sometimes laughing,
sometimes weeping.
Round and round,
through truth and deceit,
through black and white,
through success and failure.
Round and round,
the hour now comes
that the stage demands,
and in the wretched theater
of vain customs,
they will impose
the season's decree:
"Crucify God!"
"Throw yourself into drugs!"
Man is but a puppet.
Round and round,
we go on playing
according to how we are directed
how, by whom, and when?
