 YOUR BIRTHDAY

Twenty-three years ago,
on a clear and luminous night,
you, cherished dream,
became the child of dawn.

On a precious day
overflowing with hope,
your seed blossomed
for the fruit of the soul.
Your clay rejoiced
at the breath of grace,
and your wondrous being
filled my entire home.
I cradled you in amazement,
tender flesh beloved,
and your open eyes
were miracle and gift.
Your tiny smile
was a sigh within my dwelling;
your gentle nearness
banished all nostalgia.

The years have passed
swiftly as the wind,
like the flash of lightning
in a winter night.
You are still the child
of the most beloved time,
you still bear the blessed warmth
of your very first dream.
Though the soul has grown,
and the mind and body too,
the child of dawn
still beats within your chest.
And you remain noble,
and you remain good,
within the inferno that seeks to shatter
your cosmic universe.

Today I celebrate that day,
the joyful hour of your arrival,
the night awakened
by your radiant morning.
Bells of glory
moved my tears,
and today their echoes resound
for you, child of dawn.
May you live many years more
still being the child of dawn,
brave and full of dreams,
with your open, honest gaze.
And when you are old
and your hair turns white,
may you preserve untouched
the limpid heaven of your childhood.
